Condensed milk
Condensed milk . . Last Saturday, I stopped by a small mart to buy some stuff and found that there was a non-Korean who was going around inside the market to find some stuff like me. She seemingly found all the stuff that she wanted to buy and took them to the counter. Then, she asked the owner "Is there any condensed milk here?" in English. I didn't directly see what was happening, but overheard her question. After a short silence, she kept saying him like "I mean, condensed milk, you know, CONDENSED MILK! CONDENSED! MILK!" Her repetitive and irritable questioning made me go to see what was going on there. The 사장님 looked a bit embarrassed, and the woman waved her hands to describe 'condensed' and repeated the word 'condensed' and 'milk.' As far as I could see, she wasn't holding her phone in her hand. It seemed like she didn't try to use her phone to use any translator apps. While I temporarily hesitated to intervene in the situation to help him, she left the market. . In fact, I even didn't know what 'condensed milk' is in English before I started working for my previous company that specializes in importing diary products from the USA. It is not that popular in Korea. . I brought my stuff to the counter and had a small talk with the 사장님. "Are you OK? Sorry that I hesitated and couldn't help you. Her attitude is obviously inappropriate." "It is fine. I am used to it." "Are you used to it?" "You know, there is an American military base nearby. I haven't met any American soldiers who tried to speak Korean to explain their things to me except for Korean Americans who were adopted by American families and returned to Korea because of their interest in their ancestral heritage." . . I've met some people who had the attitude like "I will speak English louder and more aggressively, they will understand." Please and Please use translator apps like Papago / Google translator or Naver dictionary. Please do not expect every Korean to fully understand your mother tongues. Koreans understand Korean language.
